So, what is spot UV?

Spot UV AKA spot gloss or spot varnish is not technically a printing technique but a method of coating on the printed product. It is a relatively simple process of applying. Ultra Violet (UV) to the paper or paperboard product. The UV light cures the varnish applied to the material, which produces a glossy finish to any design elements you choose. This method is very effective on color-printed products, it enhances the products’ shine, protects the color, and keeps away moisture and damage which preserves the life of the finished product.

This technique targets specific areas, sealing in their color and producing an attractive sheen. Spot finishes can also create texture on a printed surface for an eye-catching effect. It works very well with a matte lamination as well; the contrast adds depth to your design creating a final product that promotes your brand and gives your potential clients something they won’t want to throw away. You can get a similar effect with matte UV, matte on matte, or matte on gloss. Give your packaging a look of luxury.

So how does it work?

A separate file is created by you or our great prepress team that is a mask and shows where the UV coating will be applied. No gradients blur or shadows. Then the use of a silkscreen adds a clear UV coating on only the areas you have selected. Once the coating is applied the sheets are fed through infra-red and UV lamps which dries the coating instantly.
